General Zhang He, upon seeing Zhao Yun, was greatly startled and quickly retreated. Zhao Yun rode forward at full gallop, when suddenly two generals shouted from behind, "Zhao Yun, don't run!" Two more generals, wielding different weapons, blocked his path. Pursuing him were Ma Yan and Zhang Yi, while blocking his way were Jiao Chu and Zhang Nan, all generals who had originally surrendered to Yuan Shao.
Zhao Yun faced these four generals alone, while Cao Cao's army surrounded
him. Zhao Yun then drew his Qinggang sword and slashed wildly. With each swing,
enemy armor was pierced, and blood gushed out like fountains. Zhao Yun fought
off the surrounding soldiers and broke through the encirclement.
Meanwhile, Cao Cao, atop Jing Mountain, saw a general whose presence was
unstoppable and hurriedly asked who the man was. Cao Hong rode swiftly down the
mountain, shouting, "General of the army, please reveal your name!"
Zhao Yun loudly replied, "I am Zhao Zilong of Changshan!" Cao Hong
returned to report to Cao Cao. Cao Cao exclaimed, "What a fierce general!
I must capture him alive!" He immediately ordered a messenger to relay the
message to all his troops: "If you see Zhao Yun, do not fire arrows;
capture him alive!" This allowed Zhao Yun to escape danger.
Zhao Yun fought his way out of the encirclement, far from Cao Cao's main
force, his battle robe stained with blood. As he continued his journey, two
more armies charged out from the hillside—the Zhong brothers, Zhong Jin and
Zhong Shen, generals under Xiahou Dun. One wielded a large axe, the other a
halberd, shouting, "Zhao Yun, dismount and we'll tie you up!" Zhong
Jin and Zhong Shen blocked Zhao Yun's path and engaged him in battle. Zhao Yun
thrust his spear. Zhong Jin swung his axe to meet him. The two horses clashed,
and in less than three rounds, Zhao Yun pierced Zhong Jin's horse, knocking him
from his horse. Zhao Yun continued on his way.
Zhong Shen, wielding his halberd, pursued from behind Zhao Yun's horse.
Zhao Yun hastily turned his horse, and the two men's chests collided. Zhao Yun
used his left hand to block the halberd with his spear, and with his right
hand, he drew his Qinggang sword and slashed, severing Zhong Shen's helmet and
head in half. Zhong Shen fell from his horse and died, and the remaining
soldiers scattered. Zhao Yun finally escaped and ran towards Changban Bridge. A
loud shout came from behind; it was General Wen Ping leading his troops in
pursuit.
When Zhao Yun reached the bridge, he and his horse were exhausted. He saw
Zhang Fei standing on the bridge with his spear, shouting, "Yide (Zhang
Fei's courtesy name), save me!" Zhang Fei said, "Zilong, you go
quickly, I'll hold off the pursuers." Zhao Yun rode across the bridge and
traveled more than twenty li, where he saw Liu Bei and his men resting under a
tree. Zhao Yun dismounted and prostrated himself on the ground, weeping. Liu
Bei also wept.
Zhao Yun, panting, said, "My sins are too great; even death a
thousand times wouldn't be enough! Lady Mi (Liu Bei's wife) was mortally
wounded and refused to mount her horse, jumping into a well to commit suicide.
I could only push down the earthen wall to cover the well. I carried the little
prince (A Dou) and broke through the encirclement. Fortunately, thanks to my
lord's good fortune, we escaped safely. Just now, the little prince was crying
in my arms, but now there's no sound; I'm afraid I couldn't save him." He
loosened his clothes to check; it turned out A Dou was just asleep and hadn't
woken up yet. Zhao Yun said happily, "Thank goodness the prince is
alright!" He handed A Dou to Liu Bei with both hands.
Liu Bei took A Dou, threw him to the ground, and shouted, "For this
child, I almost lost a great general!" Zhao Yun quickly picked up A Dou
from the ground, weeping as he bowed, saying, "Even if I, Zhao Yun, were
to sacrifice my life for you, I could never repay your kindness!"
