1. Guan Yu kills Wen Chou; Liu Bei learns the news.
Guan Yu, leading several dozen cavalrymen, charged east and west across
the battlefield. While they were fighting, Liu Bei arrived with 30,000 troops.
The scouts ahead reported to Liu Bei: "This time it was the
red-faced, long-bearded general (referring to Guan Yu) who killed Wen Chou
(Yuan Shao's fierce general)!" Liu Bei hurriedly rode to see, and across
the river, he saw a troop of men running back and forth like the wind, their
banners bearing the seven characters: "Marquis of Hanshou, Guan
Yunchang."
Liu Bei silently thanked Heaven: "So my brother is indeed with Cao
Cao!" He wanted to call Guan Yu to acknowledge him but was blocked by many
Cao Cao's soldiers and had to retreat with his troops.
2. Liu Bei once again appeases Yuan Shao's anger.
Yuan Shao met with Liu Bei's army and set up camp. Guo Tu and Shen Pei
went to see Yuan Shao and said, "This time, Guan Yu killed Wen Chou again,
and Liu Bei pretended not to know." Yuan Shao was furious and cursed,
"How dare that big-eared scoundrel Liu Bei (Liu Bei's nickname) do
this!" He ordered his men to take Liu Bei out and behead him.
Liu Bei said, "Please allow me to say one more word before I die. Cao
Cao has always been jealous of me. He knows I'm with you and is afraid I'll
help you, so he deliberately sent Guan Yu to kill your two generals, hoping to
anger you. He's using you to kill me, Liu Bei! I hope you'll think through this!"
Yuan Shao listened and said, "Liu Bei is right! You people almost made me
bear the bad reputation of killing a virtuous man!" He dismissed the
soldiers around him and invited Liu Bei to sit in the main seat.
