1. Sun Ce Dominates Jiangdong
Sun Ce dominated Jiangdong with a powerful army and ample supplies. In 199
AD, he launched a surprise attack and captured Lujiang Commandery, defeating
Liu Xun. He also sent his subordinate Yu Fan to persuade the governor of
Yuzhang Commandery to surrender, and the governor, Hua Xin, surrendered. From
then on, Sun Ce's power greatly increased, and he sent Zhang Hong to Xuchang to
report the victory to Cao Cao.
2. The Scheme of Feigning Assistance
Originally, Sun Ce wanted to seize Lujiang Commandery, but because the
governor of Lujiang, Liu Xun, guarded the Lujiang River, it was difficult to
continuously cross the river to transport troops for battle, making victory
unlikely. Therefore, Sun Ce feigned his own weakness and asked Liu Xun for
help, agreeing that if he won, all the spoils would belong to Liu Xun. Liu Xun,
caught off guard, was defeated by Sun Ce.

Sun Ce wanted to obtain Liu Xun's Lujiang City. So he first pretended to Liu Xun, saying, "Let's attack Yuzhang together." Liu Xun believed him, and his main force attacked Yuzhang. Liu Xun's Lujiang city was undefended, so it fell to Sun Ce.
