The Empty City Stratagem: A Simpler Version, Easier to Learn

Zhuge Liang had already arranged his work, sending half of his army to transport supplies, leaving only 2,500 soldiers with him. Unexpectedly, Sima Yi arrived with an army of 150,000! With his generals absent, the civil officials were terrified upon hearing the news, but Zhuge Liang remained calm.

He climbed the city wall and saw dust rising in the distance; the enemy had indeed arrived. Zhuge Liang immediately gave the following orders:

1. Put down all the military flags and hide them.

2. All soldiers must remain quietly at their posts, no loud noises or wandering around; violators will be executed.

3. Open all four city gates wide and have twenty soldiers disguise themselves as civilians and sweep the gates.

4. He himself donned a long robe, took two pages, and sat on the city wall, burning incense and playing the zither.

Sima Yi's vanguard arrived at the city walls and, seeing this scene, was startled. They dared not make a move and hurried back to report. Sima Yi, disbelieving, rode over to see for himself. He found Zhuge Liang atop the city wall, relaxed and smiling, playing the zither. Two pageboys, one holding a sword, the other a whisk, flanked him, while commoners swept the streets as if nothing was amiss.

Sima Yi, suspicious, suspected a trap and feared an ambush. He immediately ordered a full retreat, fleeing back to the northern mountains.

The Empty City Stratagem by Zhuge Liang (known as Kongming) was facing a major crisis! He had sent his soldiers out to transport supplies, leaving him with only 2,500 inexperienced civil officials and soldiers. Just then, his opponent, Sima Yi, arrived with an army of 150,000 men, charging in with overwhelming force!

Everyone turned pale with fear, but Kongming remained remarkably calm. He thought, "Since a direct confrontation will surely result in defeat, I'll wage a psychological war!"

He issued the following orders:Lower the flags: Make the city appear empty, so as not to reveal the lack of manpower.

Maintain silence: All soldiers must remain at their posts, forbidden to speak or wander off.

Pretend peace: He opened all the city gates and had a few people disguised as civilians, leisurely sweeping the area at the gates.

Finally, Kongming changed into a long robe, and, accompanied by two adorable young servants, swaggered to the top of the city wall. He lit incense, and the melodious sound of his zither filled the air, a faint smile on his face.

Sima Yi's army arrived at the city walls first, and was completely stunned by the sight. They thought, "Why is Zhuge Liang, usually so cautious and heavily guarded, so open to the elements today? Are there thousands of troops lying in ambush inside? Are they going to use the terrain to their advantage and slaughter us?"

Sima Yi himself rode over to see, only to find Kongming sitting there playing his zither with ease. The people at the city gate didn't even look up, seemingly not taking this 150,000-strong army seriously at all. Sima Yi grew increasingly panicked as he observed the situation. He thought, "Given Zhuge Liang's cautious nature, superior wisdom, and clever planning, he would never dare to do this without preparation. This must be a trap! He wants to lure my army in and ambush them! It's so well done, so convincing!"

Finally, Sima Yi grew more and more frightened, fearing an ambush, and turned around, shouting, "Retreat!" Thus, 150,000 troops were frightened away by Kongming's "Empty City Stratagem."
